In the realm of movies, Chowallur has many labels to his credit.
Aside from creating lyrics, he has written scripts and acted in select movies too. His foray into the Malayalam movie industry while pursuing a career in journalism is a reflection of his wide network of friends and well-wishers.
Like literature, he was passionate about movies right from his childhood. His innate ability to make friends with anyone and impress them with his talent worked well while meeting actors or directors from the Malayalam film industry. One such casual encounter with actor Madhu became a turning point in his career, opening a door to surprising opportunities and fame.
In his own words.”I met him once on his visit to Kozhikode. When he learned that I write stories, he asked me to bring my published books. I did, and he liked one of the stories. When he said, let us make a movie out of this, I was shocked. My story and a movie. He said it is how it happens. And thus was born ‘Prabhathasandhya” with my story, screenplay and dialogues.”
Released in 1979, it was Madhu’s first production venture and had him playing the main role along with Soman and Sreevidya. The film directed by P Chandrakumar became a hit.
Chowallur penned songs for movies such as Thulavarsham, Nadi muthal nadi vare, Kalopasana, Panchavipalam, Ashtabandham, Aana, Allimalarkkavu amongst others.
The dialogues he wrote for Hariharan-directed Sargam were the highlight of this blockbuster musical. It brought him recognition from far and wide, with writers including M.T Vasudevan Nair praising the movie that carved a niche in Malayalam cinema.
In subsequent years Chowallur penned/wrote scripts for the movies Chaithanyam, Sreeragam, Karppooradeepam and Sasinas.
His presence in Malayalam movies was not limited to behind-the-scenes. A handful of movies have seen him as an actor, sharing the screen with well-known actors and portraying noticeable characters. He could be seen in ‘Maram’, ‘Nellu’, ‘Thiruvonam’, ‘Shristi’ and ”Shalini Ente Koottukari’ among others.
During his association with the Malayalam movie industry for many decades, Chowallur made personal friendships with several other prominent directors, actors and producers. Notable amongst them are Ramu Kariat, Sathyan Anthikad, Hariharan, Mohan, Innocent, M G Soman, Nedumudi Venu, Shaji N Karun, Jayaram, P V Gangadharan (Grihalakshmi Productions), KPAC Lalitha, V K Sreeraman.
Chowallur didn’t limit himself to one role in his life, and the Malayalam movie is enriched with the contributions of this multi-faceted personality in more ways than one.
