For decades, Chowallur’s name has been synonymous with Kerala’s traditional art and culture, and events related to Malayalam literature, devotional music and spiritual discourses. His presence enlightened Malayali gatherings abroad too as he shared his immense wisdom, inspiring thoughts and unparalleled insights.
As the esteemed member of the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi and the Kerala Sahitya Akademi, and as the Vice-Chairman of Kerala Kalamandalam for two separate terms,, he was an integral part of the state’s cultural landscape. He served as a Jury member on Award committees for Literature Awards as well as Film festivals.
Chowallur was keen on promoting folk arts and supporting artists in his official roles and took the initiative in holding events and camps that popularised Kerala’s art forms. While holding the position of Vice-Chairman of Kalamandalam , he toured England along with a troupe of celebrity performers.
He was actively involved with KALA, Kerala Arts & Literary Association, United Kingdom, with whom he shared a deep rooted association, sharing their vision encouraging their various activities to promote the state’s culture in a faraway land. He wrote KALA’s signature song that is played each year during the lamp lighting ceremony at the Annual Day, named the literature and cinema appreciation club “Nadumuttam”and contributed to various activities. He loved interacting with the young and the old, helping them in their efforts to connect with their roots.
As a writer and editor, he had been lending his insightful voice to several publications after his retirement from Malayala Manorama, offering guidance and writing thoughtful columns on a variety of topics. Through his diverse activities, Chowallur played an indispensable role in shaping and revitalizing the art and cultural scene of this state.
